"Important engagements" have been canceled by George A. Gibson, now held at police headquarters after his arrest Saturday by Traffic Patrolman Michael Boylan on charge of stealing jewelry valued at $2,500 from Wiss Sons, Inc.

The prisoner was identified by a Social Security card found on him when he was searched by Sergeant Warren Moffatt. He is charged with stealing platinum ring settings October 28 from the jewelry store at 665 Broad street.

Gibson's mode of operation, police said, was to ask to see rings. Then Gibson, police alleged, would ask to see some fraternal emblems. When the salesman turned, police added, Gibson and rings would disappear.

Having obtained a description of Gibson, Detective James Manning and Moffatt and the gangster squad circularized it among merchants dealing in old gold. Boylan spotted Gibson Saturday afternoon crossing at the Four Corners.

"Come here," Boylan requested. "I'd like to talk to you."

"Why, I'm busy and must get over to New York. I have some important business appointments," Gibson answered.

Gibson insisted he was George Davis of Philadelphia. He denied guilt at first but later admitted the theft, police said.
